What is a CSCS card?
A CSCS card records that its holder has achieved a recognised qualification for their occupation and passed a health, safety and environment test. Most sites require one for access.

</figure>It is a scheme card rather than a legal requirement, and the distinction matters: the law requires competence, and the card is one widely-adopted way of evidencing part of it. Sites impose it as an access rule, which is why it functions as though it were mandatory.
Cards are occupation-specific and carry an expiry. The common failure is not a fake card but a genuine one that lapsed, or one held for a different occupation than the work being done.
Checking a card means verifying it rather than looking at it. Cards can be checked against the scheme's own records, and a site that does this at induction finds the problems that a visual check does not.
What goes wrong in practice
- Expired cards in circulation because nobody tracks the dates after induction.
- A card for one occupation accepted for work in another.
- Visual checks only, with nothing verified against the scheme.
- Treating the card as evidence of competence for a specific task rather than of general training.
